Expo at the Waikiki Aquarium to Teach Green

The City’s Department of Environmental Services is co-hosting an Expo at the Waikiki Aquarium on Saturday, April 9th. The aim of the event is to teach all how to care for the environment.

The Expo is free to attend from 9 a.m. thru 2 p.m. and the first 500 families will receive a native plant and activity book.  There will also be prize giveaways.

Local organizations will also be on hand to demonstrate green ways of living and Moi fish will be released into the water.

Parking is available at the Waikiki Elementary School and a shuttle will provide transportation between the school and the aquarium.

City sponsoring numerous Earth Month events

In celebration of Earth Month, the City's Department of Environmental Services is co-sponsoring numerous ocean-oriented activities on Saturday, April 9. The events include Adopt-A-Stream and Block cleanups, along with the Mauka to Makai Clean Water Expo.

"This is a great opportunity for everyone, especially families, to learn how to take care of our environment," said Mayor Peter Carlisle. "The City and County of Honolulu is proud to be working with our partners to inspire others to get involved in protecting our natural resources."

The Expo is free from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waikiki Aquarium. Parking is available at the Waikiki Elementary School with a free shuttle service.

Stream cleanups take place at Manoa-Kolomono Ditch from 8:30 to 11 a.m., Manoa-Woodlawn from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Palolo from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

"With Aloha" fundraiser at Pagoda Hotel to help out hospital near Sendai, Japan

The Pagoda Hotel near Ala Moana will hold a "With Aloha" fundraiser for the Tahoku University Hospital in Sendai, Japan, on April 9 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Sendai is a large coastal city in the Miyagi Prefecture of Japan. On March 11, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami waves capping at 77 feet dealt massive damage to the city. Since then, Tahoku University Hospital has provided food, medicine and comfort items to people in need.

A $50 ticket ($60 at the door) will get you inside, where 24 restaurants are participating, from Le Bistro to Pagoda, and from Nalo Farms to Ryan's Grill. Brother Noland, Juke Joint 5PM, Ka'ala boys, Natural Vibes and others will provide music, with a crane booth and silent auction to complement the night.

National Public Health Week promotes injury prevention, save money on medical

 

Seniors: receive a free screening and valuable information on how to prevent falls from the Prime Time Wellness Fair at the Neil Blaisdell Exhibition Hall April 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

The Department of Health's Injury Prevention program will participate in the fair as part of a motive to promote National Public Health Week. Their motto? "Safety is No Accident: Live Injury-Free."

 

Nationally, injury as a cause of death surpasses any other causes combined, including hearth disease, stroke and cancer.

Beer thief dies after falling under tour bus

Beer thief dies after falling under tour bus

Honolulu police say a beer thief died after falling under a tour bus Monday night.

The incident happened at 10:35 p.m. on Koa Street. According to police, a 21-year-old man had stolen two 12-packs of beer from an ABC Store in the Hyatt Regency.

While the running away, the man tripped and fell underneath a tour bus.

According to officials, he was run over and dragged 100 feet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Open Registration for the Oahu Junior Lifegaurd Program

Starting April 23rd, applicants may register for the City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division.

Those interested can also apply online starting on April 9th at myjuniorguards.com

On-site registration is available at Ala Moana Beach Park on April 23rd at the Ocean Training Safety Center from 9 a.m. thru 3 p.m.

The Junior Lifeguard Program is open to boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 17 years old as of June 1st, 2011. Skills taught include ocean training, beach skills, swimming, physical rescuing techniques, CPR and first aid to name a few.

A total of seven sessions will be offered starting on June 6th and ending with the Junior Lifeguard Championship on July 30th on the Big Island.

A suggested donation of $45 can be made payable to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.
