Open Registration for the Oahu Junior Lifegaurd Program

Starting April 23rd, applicants may register for the City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division.

Those interested can also apply online starting on April 9th at myjuniorguards.com

On-site registration is available at Ala Moana Beach Park on April 23rd at the Ocean Training Safety Center from 9 a.m. thru 3 p.m.

The Junior Lifeguard Program is open to boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 17 years old as of June 1st, 2011. Skills taught include ocean training, beach skills, swimming, physical rescuing techniques, CPR and first aid to name a few.

A total of seven sessions will be offered starting on June 6th and ending with the Junior Lifeguard Championship on July 30th on the Big Island.

A suggested donation of $45 can be made payable to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.

Renown Taiko Drummer Kenny Endo to Perform at Benefit Concert for Japan

A famous taiko drum musician, Kenny Endo, will perform a concert to benefit victims of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The concert will be held on April 8, at 6 p.m. at the Unity Church of Hawaii, located on 3608 Diamond Head Circle, in Honolulu. Concert-goers are encouraged to give $20. All of the proceeds from the concert will go to the Japan Red Cross.

Ando has been featured in the soundtracks of many films, most recently in the blockbuster movie Avatar and has played with musicians such as Michael Jackson and Prince.  

Light refreshments will be served and guests have the chance to win giveaways.

Honolulu Fire Department welcomes 24 fire fighters

The Honolulu Fire Department welcomed 24 fire fighters Friday morning as the 96th fire fighter recruitment class celebrated its graduation day.

The ceremony was held at Ala Moana Parks McCoy Pavilion.

In addition to training in rescue procedures, emergency medical service and hazardous materials response, the recruits also took part in a blood drive.

The graduates were all given their badges and their station assignments.

Duke’s Waikiki recently teamed up with Malama Maunalua to remove 6,000 pounds of invasive algae from Maunalua Bay.

This was the second huki that Duke’s Waikiki and Malama Maunalua participated in together and follows the restaurant’s recent $5,000 donation to the local non-profit, whose mission is to restore and preserve Maunalua Bay.

4th Annual 'Mauka to Makai Expo'

In celebration of Earth Day, the City & County of Honolulu's Dept. of Environmental Services will presenet the 4th Annual Mauka to Makai Environmental Expo on Sat. April 9 from 9am to 2pm at the Waikiki Aquarium.

The FREE Expo will showcase the efforts of more than 30 City, State and Federal agencies and private organizations to preserve and protect Hawaii's environment, with an emphasis on the island's unique water resources and storm water runoff pollution prevention from 'mauka to makai'. Fun for the whole family with hands on educational displays, picture taking, water prevention games and activity books, and more.

Honolulu Zoo seeking accreditation from Association of Zoos and Aquariums

The Honolulu Zoo is developing a comprehensive compliance plan to address the various issues that prevented it from earning accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Last week, the AZA tabled its re-accreditation of the zoo for one year. The AZA acknowledged the positive strides taken by the zoo including its overall physical appearance and a brand new, attractive zoo entrance.
