Police charge man in connection with suspicious backpack in Waikiki

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow)- Honolulu Police have charged a man in connection with a suspicious backpack that resulted in the shutdown of a block of Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

Trenton Christenson, 28, was arrested and charged with second-degree terroristic threatening, a misdemeanor. He has no local address. Bail was set at $2,000.

According to Honolulu Police Capt. Ryan Borges, the man was seen leaving the backpack in front of the Cartier store at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center at about 2 p.m.

Police evacuated that part of the shopping center and closed Kalakaua Avenue between Lewers Street and Royal Hawaiian Avenue as a precaution during the investigation.

A remote-controlled robot was used to X-ray the backpack. Shortly afterward, a bomb squad technician wearing safety gear examined the backpack and determined that there were no explosives inside. Police then gave the all-clear and reopened the area at 5 p.m.

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow)- Crews from the Board of Water Supply have repaired a 6-inch water main on Kalakaua Avenue.  The break was reported at 11 a.m.  No customers are affected by this break.

The break forced the closure of two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of Kalakaua Avenue between Ala Wai Boulevard and McCully Street. These lanes will remain closed as crews work to backfill the waterline and conduct road repairs.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes where possible.
