Honolulu Zoo director to resign

Manuel Mollinedo

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow)- The director of the Honolulu Zoo is resigning after two years on the job.

Director Manuel Mollinedo tells Hawaii News Now he has decided to leave for personal reasons after accomplishing the goals he had set for the zoo. His final day will be March 1.

Mollinedo started the job in December 2010, shortly before the zoo's accreditation was put on hold.

"I think I was here a month-and-a-half when the accreditation inspectors came out, and we didn't pass accreditation at that point. We were actually put on probation," said Mollinedo.

One of the major problems was the cramped quarters for the zoo's two female elephants. On Mollinedo's watch, the zoo opened a new, $12 million habitat for the animals.

The zoo also unveiled a new entrance, and fixed other problems that hindered accreditation, including putting in new signs and maps for visitors. Accreditation was fully renewed in April 2012.

Sea turtle dies after boat strike off Waikiki

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow)- The Dept. of Land and Natural Resources is investigating following a report of a boat striking a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle in the water off Waikiki.

Ocean Safety officials say a group of surfers saw the turtle early Wednesday afternoon and tried to bring it back to shore. Before they reached the beach, the turtle broke free and swam away toward Ala Moana Beach.

A short time later, the wounded turtle was spotted again closer to Kaiser's Beach. DLNR was able to slowly lead it to land, where they could carefully tend to its injuries.

When veterinarians with NOAA arrived, they noted that the turtle was alive, but clearly injured – with a large slash in its shell and innards exposed.  It was taken to a facility for care, but died in transport, a spokesperson for NOAA says.

Initial reports indicate the turtle was injured by a propeller strike from a boat.

Lion cubs at Honolulu Zoo to make public debut in one month

Image: The Honolulu Zoo

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow)- The lion cubs at the Honolulu Zoo are growing up fast. They are almost six weeks old now and weigh 14 pounds each, which animal experts say is fairly large compared to cubs living in the wild.

The young lions will be ready for public viewing in about a month, zoo officials say. Until then, the public is invited to view the cubs on a closed circuit monitor at the Honolulu Zoo. Four cameras are watching their every move.

The cubs were born to the zoo's lioness, Moxy, on Dec. 15.  The four-year-old lioness was obtained through a breeding loan with New York's Bronx Zoo in November 2010, coordinated through Species Survival Program (SSP) guidelines.

Her mate, Ekundu, or "Red" in Swahili, arrived in Honolulu on July 1, 2010 from the San Diego Wildlife Park. Ekundu is five years old and also part of a breeding loan program governed by SSP.
