Opening Ceremonies Shine at Special Olympics Hawai'i's 44th Annual State Summer Games

WHAT: Special Olympics athletes from across the state will parade into the Les Murakami Stadium Friday, May 25, 2012 for the organization's 44th annual State Summer Games' Opening Ceremonies.

The Opening Ceremonies also celebrates the finish line of the First Hawaiian Bank Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run. This year commemorates the 25th anniversary of Officer Troy Barboza's passing. Officer Barboza was widely known in the Special Olympics Hawai'i community for his exceptional volunteerism and was equally well-regarded as an outstanding officer of the Honolulu Police Department. Tragically, Barboza was killed in October 1987 as a result of a drug arrest he had previously made. The impact Officer Barboza made on Special Olympics Hawai'i and the community-at-large touched the lives of many, and as a result his name has been officially added to Hawai'i's Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Months of training and tons of fierce determination have prepared more than 1,100 local athletes and coaches from around the state to compete in an Olympic-style competition that celebrates sportsmanship and sports.  This year, athletes will participate in powerlifting, softball, track and field, and swimming. Additionally, Special Olympics Hawai'i will provide a Healthy Athlete Village and Olympic Town with activities for athletes and families to enjoy throughout the event. Closing Ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday, May 27, at 12:45 p.m. on Ching Field.
